Bible Words Acrostic
THE CROSS
Isa. 52:14 (NIV)
Just as there were many who were appalled at him —
his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being
and his form marred beyond human likeness.
Cicero was so afraid of the practice of crucifixion that he didn’t even
want to think about it. So, he wrote in the 1st century BC: “Let the very word ‘cross’ be far removed from not only the bodies of Roman citizens, but even from their thoughts, their eyes, and their ears."He viewed the cross as a symbol of unspeakable horror, which it was.
When I see someone wearing a cross I like to ask them if they understand what it symbolizes. You might be surprised at some of the answers. Then I ask them if it is OK for me to tell them what the cross means to christians. Given permission I tell the various views of the cross.
Rome’s view of the Cross
Cruelty - Totally Inhuman.
Ruthless - Without Mercy.
Obscene - Spectacle of human depravity.
Shameful - Grotesque human Indignity.
Savage - Vicious unrelenting torture.
God’s View of the Cross
Compassion for the sinful human race.
Redemption for undeserving sinners.
Offering the sacrifice that could alone atone for sin.
Substitute, taking the place of sinners.
Salvation for all believe in the Son of God Jesus, as Savior and Lord.
Christian’s View of the Cross
Center of our faith in God.
Reason for loving God.
On going witness, telling the good News of God.
Symbolizes the motivation of service for God.
Serves as an example of being a living sacrifice for God.
Col.1 19-20 (NKJV)
“19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 And by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.”
The cross epitomizes the love of God and means everything to Christians!!! And the words of this very moving hymn express so well the wonder and glory of the cross.
“The Old Rugged Cross.”
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best For a world of lost sinners was slain.
Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary.
In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see,For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, To pardon and sanctify me.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross…” !!!!!
